A new, glass building block containing solar cells generates electricity while allowing daylight in.

The block, called ‘Solar Squared’, contains solar cells and looks similar to existing glass building blocks.

Developed at the University of Exeter in the UK, the Solar Squared block is part of a new area of tech called Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV).

Tesla’s solar tiles proved solar cells can integrate into building materials. This means planning for solar power can now start with a building’s blueprint.

Solar Squared blocks have intelligent optics that focus incoming solar radiation onto small solar cells. This enhances the overall energy generated by each solar cell. The electricity generated is then available to power the building, or to be sent to solar storage batteries.

Buildings consume 40 per cent of global power

According to Solar Squared’s designers, buildings consume over 40 per cent of the world’s electricity.

This new technology allows electricity production at the site of use, while being integrated into the building.

The other advantage of the new blocks is they are designed with better thermal insulation than traditional glass blocks. This means they contribute to the energy efficiency of the building.

Although much of the sunlight passes through to illuminate the building’s interior, added tinting to the glass blocks can stop rooms overheating.

Use of Building Integrated Photovoltaics is growing

Dr Hasan Baig, from the University of Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute, said BIPV is a growing industry.

“We are aiming to build integrated, affordable, efficient and attractive solar technologies, which have the smallest impact on the local landscape,” he said.

“It’s an exciting venture, and one that should capture the imagination of the construction industry.”

Developers say Solar Squared blocks will be suitable for office blocks, train stations and car parks.

The blocks are now in the prototype phase. However, developers are acquiring a patent on the technology and plan to move to pilot tests soon. Estimates are that Solar Squared blocks will be available commercially in 2018.
