Power bills will fall by more than $2,000 per year for owners of a new smart battery system.

The smart systems can identify times of household off-peak electricity use. The product then stores power rather than returning it to the grid for use by other consumers.
Money-saving smart energy system
Modelling for the Essentia housing project in Norwest shows homeowners could save between $2,000 and $2,200 annually.
Because electricity prices are expected to rise in coming years, this saving could also increase.
Households can then get maximum savings using the combined 5.13 kW solar installation and 10 kWh sonnen battery.
The smart platform allows homeowners to charge their battery using cheaper off-peak power purchased from the grid. They can then access stored energy during the most expensive peak times.
Owners can also join the sonnenFlat network to create their own virtual power plant. This gives them flat electricity from $30 per month with no power bills.
PowerPlay app lets you take control of energy use
The Essentia smart battery system is one of a growing number of money-saving smart energy devices.
Energy Matters’ own smart energy system is PowerPlay, which helps households monitor and control power usage. PowerPlay does this by assessing how much energy you use, and when, and comparing it to your energy plan and previous usage.
Because the PowerPlay app collects this critical data it can then advise how to optimise your solar battery system. It analyses the way you live then prompts you to save energy – and reduce your power bills – in various ways.
Behind the meter power trading: the next big thing
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) supports the rollout of smart technology.
ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht says half of future energy generation is likely to happen behind the meter.
This means ‘mum and dad’ solar generators will be able to trade electricity with each other and also the main grid.
Essentia homes with the smart battery system will go on sale this month with a starting price of $1.3 million.
