Over half of Vic’s battery rebates remain

On 1 July 2019 Solar Victoria launched the new round of State Rebates, and the news was good for those looking to add solar and/or batteries onto their properties. Even renters could benefit from the new scheme.

For eligible solar consumers ready to take the plunge into the field, they could get as much $2225 off, and for battery enthusiasts, up to $4838 was on offer.

But there was some disappointment from retailers and installers within the industry, largely due to the number of battery rebates available and the limited number of locations allowed. Solar Victoria put caps on the number of rebates available, because they want the funding to last the full 10 years it was intended.

How does the solar rebate work in Victoria?

As of Sept 16, 2019, there remains still 108/200 battery rebates worth up to $4838 for eligible Victorians, until October 31, 2019.

See below for eligibility:

  • Owner-occupiers have a combined household taxable income of less than $180,000 per annum (based on any of the last two years’ Australian Tax Office Notice of Assessments)
  • You must have an existing property, valued at under $3 million;
  • It must sit within a targeted postcode, as identified by Solar Victoria;
  • It must have existing solar PV panels installed with a capacity equal to or greater than 5kW;
  • You must agree to install an energy storage solution listed on Solar Victoria’s Approved Battery List;
  • You may not have an existing energy storage system;
  • The property address has had no previous participation in the Solar Homes Program;
  • You should be willing to receive information from their Distribution Network Service Provider about participating in battery trials. This is to maximise the value households get from their battery; and
  • You must agree to receive a free safety inspection and/or audit under the Solar Victoria Audit Program, if selected.
