Solar has become the world’s favourite new type of electricity generation, according to global data showing that more solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity is being installed than any other generation technology.
Worldwide, some 73 gigawatts of net new solar PV capacity was installed in 2016. Wind energy came in second place (55GW), with coal relegated to third (52GW), followed by gas (37GW) and hydro (28GW).
Newly released data has confirmed that a second rooftop solar boom is currently happening around Australia.
Thanks to falling costs of technology and the increasingly volatile prices of electricity, almost one quarter of households in Australia have been found to have solar panels installed.
Finalists in the 2017 Clean Energy Council Awards were revealed this week, reflecting the growing sophistication of clean energy solutions in Australia.
Award winners will be announced on Tuesday, July 18 at the NAB Gala Dinner as part of the Australian Clean Energy Summit in Sydney.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is the latest organisation to unlock the potential of solar power.
The ongoing Electricity Optimization Project (EOP) is installing solar power into QPS facilities across the state.
