A CSIRO solar energy expert says our next generation of electricians and engineers should look to the solar energy industry for inspiration. CSIRO Research Group Leader for Solar Energy Systems Dr Greg Wilson told the Herald Sun that Australia’s renewable energy boom offers secondary students the chance to think big about a career in science, engineering or the electrical trades.
Australia’s renewable energy growth means it will reach close to 80 per cent renewables by 2030 if it continues on its current path. Data released by independent researchers Green Energy Markets (GEM) shows a “spectacular” level of renewable construction and rooftop solar installation activity across the nation since 2017.
The number of Australian household solar power installations has reached 2 million, a milestone for the young solar industry. Queensland leads the nation, with almost 600,000 homes – or 30 per cent of households – fitted with solar panels. The Sunshine State also boasts four of the top five solar postcodes in the country.
NSW needs a strong state Renewable Energy Target (RET) ahead of its March 2019 state election, according to the Clean Energy Council. In Victoria, the Andrews Labor Government pledged a state RET of 50 per cent by 2030 if it won the November election. The CEC says Andrews’ subsequent landslide victory demonstrated that voters will back a compelling clean energy policy.
