Energy Networks Australia has welcomed the decision to establish a register of rooftop solar and batter storage systems for the national electricity market.
According to chief executive officer Andrew Dillon the new rules are vital to ensure network businesses could better service customers and manage the increasing amounts of distributed energy resources (DER) connecting to the grid.
Four years ago a viral campaign wooed the world with a promise of fighting climate change and jump-starting the economy by replacing tarmac on the world’s roads with solar panels. The bold idea has undergone some road testing since then. The first results from preliminary studies have recently come out, and they’re a bit underwhelming.
Recent developments show that Victoria is leading the pack when it comes to state solar installation subsidies. The Andrews Government’s Solar Homes scheme announced in August is a glittering carrot dangled by a government facing a November election. But when it comes to solar energy policy, let’s accept that the ends may have to justify the means; that is, if it takes an election to inspire political leadership to reduce emissions and energy prices, then we should be all for it.
The Victorian state government has announced regulations to prevent overshadowing solar panels by new developments. The new rulings will apply under amendments to the Victorian Planning Provisions and will come into effect in late September of 2018.
