Western Australia is to remove a regulatory barrier against battery storage within a month, WA Energy Minister Mike Nahan has said.
The market for solar + battery storage globally is expected to grow tenfold in less than five years – and Australia will be one of the largest markets for battery systems.
A new report from the Climate Council says ‘behind-the-meter’ battery storage is expected to experience similar growth to that of solar PV and half of all households in Australia are predicted to install solar + battery systems.
The second-largest utility-scale solar power plant in Australia is expected to be fully operating by the end of 2015.
The 53MW solar farm in Broken Hill, NSW, installed the project’s final advanced photovoltaic modules successfully.
First Solar, the project developer, recently announced the milestone, just under a month since the plant’s first generation was achieved, when the National Electricity Market was fed an initial 26 MW of renewable energy.
Residents in the seat of Barton have met with their local member Nickolas Varvaris and asked him to take pledge to Stand Up For Solar.
In productive discussions Mr Varvaris was personally supportive of solar, but held back on making a full commitment to a renewable energy goal of at least 50% by 2030.
