Driving Australia’s Road to Net Zero

Australia is steering full throttle toward a cleaner, greener transport future—with the government aiming for net zero emissions by 2050, electric vehicles (EVs) are set to play a starring role. Whether it’s building better infrastructure, expanding choice, or cutting costs for buyers, the nation is putting the pedal down on its EV revolution.

A National Strategy With Big Goals

At the heart of this push is the National Electric Vehicle Strategy. It’s not just about cars—it’s about shaping a sustainable future. The strategy focuses on three key goals:

  • Boosting the supply of affordable and accessible EVs
  • Rolling out the infrastructure and systems to support rapid uptake
  • Driving demand by making EVs a more attractive option for Aussies

Put simply, it’s about giving drivers more choice, making EVs easier to own and operate, and reducing emissions along the way.

From Consultation to Action

This strategy isn’t a top-down affair. Over 1,500 individuals and 200+ organisations—from industry and unions to local governments—have had their say. And the message is loud and clear: Australians are ready to make the switch.

Mapping Out the Charge

To ensure EV drivers can charge up wherever they roam, the government has rolled out the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) Mapping Tool. Built with help from states, territories, and Evenergi, this tool forecasts fast-charging needs across the country through to 2034, and helps identify the best locations for new chargers.

Driving the Nation Fund: Fuel for the Transition

The Driving the Nation Fund is backing this transition with real dollars and serious infrastructure. Some standout initiatives include:

  • DRIVEN Program – $60 million to install EV chargers at dealerships and repair centres. More info
  • National EV Charging Network – $39.3 million for 117 chargers along key highways. Details here
  • Driving the Nation Program – Backed by ARENA, this supports various projects to slash transport emissions. Learn more

A Standard for Cleaner Cars

The New Vehicle Efficiency Standard is another major step forward. It’s about:

  • Saving drivers money at the pump
  • Encouraging cleaner car imports
  • Giving buyers more efficient options

Support at Every Level

It’s not just the Feds pushing EVs. State and territory governments offer a range of rebates and incentives to sweeten the deal. Check your local links for what’s on offer:

Making EVs More Affordable

The 2022 Electric Car Discount is already helping many Aussies make the leap. It offers a fringe benefits tax exemption for eligible EVs provided to employees, reducing upfront costs via salary packaging.

On top of that, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) is making green car loans cheaper, nudging more people toward EV ownership.

Perks for Business, Too

Running a business? You might be eligible for an instant asset write-off when purchasing an EV. It’s another win for the hip pocket and the planet.

A Greener Drive Ahead

Australia is on a journey to cleaner transport and reduced emissions. From national strategies and mapping tools to local incentives and tax breaks, the support is building across the board.
